Bill Tracker, our dorm's bill splitter
A small web app that four roommates use to split rent and bills and keep track of who has paid.
How it came to be
My roommates and I share six recurring bills in our dorm: rent, electricity, water, drinking water, internet and YouTube Premium. We tracked them in an Excel spreadsheet, and we kept forgetting who had already paid. I wanted to bring some order to paying the bills.
So I turned the spreadsheet into a web app. It runs on a small server on the dorm Wi-Fi, so everyone can open it on their phone, see what they owe this month and tap to mark a share as paid. It's protected by a PIN, and you can attach a photo of your bank-transfer slip as proof.
What I learned
Phones are unreliable clients. Early on, edits made on a phone sometimes disappeared when the browser was put in the background. I had to make sure every change is saved to the server before the page goes to sleep, and that reopening the app never overwrites a change that hasn't been saved yet.
